google-chrome_300Well, there's been a shakeup in the browser world, though it's not entirely unexpected. Google Chrome, the newcomer in the world of broswers, has overtaken Safari to claim the #3 position, behind #2 Firefox and #1 Internet Explorer.

Granted, it's not a blowout but, I don't see this trend reversing itself.  According to Net Applications, the market share, by browser, breaks down like this:

  • Internet Explorer: 62.69% (over half of this number is now IE8 installs)
  • Mozilla Firefox: 24.61%
  • Google Chrome: 4.63%
  • Safari: 4.46%

As I've said previously, Internet Explorer will probably not see its market share threatened any time soon but, Firefox will probably face challenges from this up-and-comer.  Chrome is lightning-quick and has a growing library of extensions that will likely rival those of Firefox pretty soon.  Firefox is still my favorite but, honestly, compared to Chrome it does feel sluggish.

We'll just have to see what 2010 brings but, something tells me we may be talking about another shakeup this time next year.
