banned_message_400It's not the first time this has happened but, it may be the largest single occurrence of such an action. InformationWeek is reporting that Microsoft has banned 1,000,000 users from its Xbox Live service because the company believes that they are playing on "modded" consoles. Modified consoles allow users to play "backups", or copies of games burned to disc that may have been downloaded.

Obviously, when games aren't being purchased, it's going to impact Microsoft's bottom line so, the company is taking steps to severely limit the benefits to owners of modified consoles.

As far as the owners of the modded consoles are concerned, Microsoft is not disabling their ability to play pirated versions of the games on their Xboxes. However, Microsoft is saying that you can't go online and play over their service. Given that millions of users do just that, it is sure to be a blow to owners of modded systems.

The bottom line is that if they want to play online, they are going to have to go legit to do so.
