Okay, are we done with IE 6?
Okay, today, I've had it!
One of my biggest pet peeves in trying to lay out the look of a web site is dealing with CSS (cascading style sheets) for the various browsers that are out there. With this site, I have only gone so far as to work on the look in Firefox and IE 6+. However, today I have made the decision that my days of worrying about IE6 are over.
I won't go into details about the straw that broke the camel's back for me but, let's just say that it's annoying always having to implement some stupid hack to CSS to make a page look normal in IE. Granted, IE6 is, by software standards, older than dirt but, many companies (mine included) use it because many of them still aren't moving to Vista and don't want to risk breaking compatibility with certain applications certified for IE6.
So, for a while now, I've given that group of users consideration. But, I think it's time to let go of that notion. Fortunately, the numbers are supporting my decision. If you look at some recent statistics on browser usage (see here and here), it appears that the usage of Internet Explorer 6 has fallen below 15% of internet users. Some have upgraded to IE7 or even IE8. Other have moved on to using Firefox (yay!), Safari, Opera, Chrome or any of the other browser available.
To me, this means that I get to worry less about abandoning IE6 in my design considerations and now get to focus on the (fewer) quirks that exist in IE7 and above. Who knows--maybe I'll try designing with another browers in mind...maybe.
