IE6, why won't you just die?
A little while back, I was reading some statistics that showed Internet Explorer 6's market share falling. Upon reading this, I was in a celebratory mood. Well, there are other statistics out there that are causing my heart to sink.
According Net Applications' market share analysis, IE6 still holds the largest share among browsers. Their statistics show IE6 at slightly more than 27% of the market.
This tells me that the demise of this browser is still years off. I believe that this number has a lot to do with companies out there who rely on IE6 for use with many of their core applications. Combine this with the fact that many of these companies are still on Windows XP (Vista installed IE7 by default and Windows 7 will use IE8 by default) and you can see that this could be why this browser will simply not go away.
This is a nightmare for web developers who have been forced to utilize some terrible hacks to make this browser take advantage of more modern CSS or web technologies.
However, I still hold out hope. I've already shared how YouTube has decided to stop supporting IE6 and I am sure that others will follow suit. Also, I am certain that more companies will be looking to move to Vista or Windows 7 in the near future. Okay, maybe I'm being a little too wishful.
So, I ask again...IE6, why won't you just die?
